Boston Wedding Band: Tips and Advice

Are you a Bride or Groom in the market for a Boston Wedding Band?

Read on. Hopefully I can shed some light on a decision that will potentially affect one of the most important days of your life… (No pressure though!)…

When searching for the perfect Boston Wedding Band, you should consider the following:

Don’t wait until the last minute!

If you want a great Boston Wedding Band, make sure the wedding band you’ve chosen is actually available for your wedding date! You don’t want to wait until 3 months before your wedding day to see some other lucky couple already snatched them up…

You might end up with something not-so-awesome.

Besides a great venue, excellent catering, and a great photographer (check out our wedding links to the right for some great ones if you haven’t found one yet), your wedding entertainment should be next on the list, whether you’re looking for a great live Boston Wedding Band, or even a Wedding DJ.

Many couples make the mistake of allocating their budget to things like wedding cake, crazy expensive centerpieces, or the little picture frames with a picture of the couple with their date engraved.

Not that those things aren’t important (I’m sure your guests love the mini picture frame and picture of you, really………), but think about what your guests would really enjoy most.

At the end of the day (your wedding day), your guests will remember:
1) That the bride looked beautiful (Sorry guys, this is THEIR day)
2) That the food was good
3) If they had a great time at your reception

Judging by only a few past wedding testimonials, wedding guests AREN’T raving about:

  • Their mango flavored wedding cake
  • The awesome centerpieces with branches that poked someone’s eye out (Yes, the ones that you need to auction off at the end of the night because nobody wants to take the centerpiece home).
  • How the linens matched the flowers perfectly
  • How the napkins had the bride and grooms name on them
  • The custom M&M’s at the candy bar
  • The candy bar
  • Candy….

Wedding planning can be REALLY stressful… Trust us, we know… We’re all married. (Sorry Mike).

So relax… Breathe… And (re)focus.

If you’ve decided to have a band at your wedding, then having great live entertainment for your wedding should be a top priority! (Sure, you’re probably thinking: “Of course! You want us to book PLAYED OUT!”)… Well, yes — you’re absolutely correct….

But think about it…

We’ve all been to weddings that make middle school dances look hip… Everyone’s sitting down, looking at their watches… ready to chew and screw…

Your wedding is the biggest party you’ll EVER throw. You want your guests to be entertained, stay all night, dance, and have a great time… Your guests are there because they “made the list” (A moment of silence for Guest List B — there just weren’t enough seats!).

It’s your ultimate party. So, show your guests the killer time they deserve, and they’ll be raving about YOUR wedding reception for years to come!

PLAYED OUT gives you an excellent alternative to the typical Boston Wedding Band. Some classics, some old school, some R&B, some Reggae… And freakin’ BILLY OCEAN!!!!!! If you’re looking for a versatile band that can do it all, then save YOUR date today!

We’ll even get grandma dancing.

Why We Won’t Play THAT song

20110401 Why We Wont Play THAT1 177x300 Why We Won’t Play THAT songWe blogged before on any number of tunes that we’ll never play and I’d like to take some additional time today to help you understand why.

You see…it’s not so much that what’s occasionally requested flat out sucks (actually…yeah…sometimes it does…do you really want to hear “Livin On A Prayer”?  Is “Jesse’s Girl” really gonna make or break your night?) it’s just that if you legitimately want to hear this stuff, clearly Played Out isn’t the band for you.  And you know what?  That’s cool.  We’re cool with that.

There’s a ton of bands out there on any given night that will serve up the same, boring, tired, “played out” list of standards that somewhere along the line someone said “hey man…if you guys want to be a really great bar band, you gotta play THIS”.

And then they all did it…

Pick any bar or club with live music this Saturday night and guaranteed  you’ll hear pretty much a similar romp through some similar tunes played by some pretty similarly marginal musicians that for the most part are just phoning it in for their paycheck.  Playin what the people want, right?

Maybe that is what some people want…though not our people…

And in the same breath that you won’t hear this Boston Wedding Band drop Wanted Dead Or Alive, Jenny 867-5309, Glory Days, Sweet Home Alabama or Don’t Stop Believing, you won’t hear these other bands drop Golddigger, Party All The Time, Here Comes The Hotstepper, Come Baby Come, Hip Hop Hooray, Let Me Clear My Throat or the like.

And in closing…there’s plenty of room in the “cover band sandbox”.  We’re the corner without any cat poop in it.

Greatest Rock Scream of All Time: Roger Daltrey

20110401 Greatest Rock Scream Of All Time Roger Daltrey1 300x235 Greatest Rock Scream of All Time: Roger Daltrey

Greatest Rock Scream of All Time?  Easy – Roger Daltrey, right at the apex of “Won’t Get Fooled Again”.  In fact, I’ll posit that in a single moment, Daltrey not only outdoes each one of his virtuostic counterparts in this masterpiece, but simultaneously defines the essence of The Who as a whole but also (pun aside) an entire generation for whom this act’s music resonated with so succinctly.

And I’ve given some thought to this too – there’s honorable mention to Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Ozzy, Soundgarden and Axl Rose on Welcome To The Jungle (among other notable entries) – though as much as I rack my brain to come up with a worthy contender, I keep coming back to that three chord Townshend lead-in and then that earth shattering bellow that still gives me goosebumps everytime.  Damned if I’ve ever heard a Boston Event Band come anywhere near the originator on this one.

The Who as a whole would (and very well may) be deserving of some additional posts down the line – something to the effect of Most Overlooked Contender for Best Band of All Time or Most Underrated Influence on Rock Music as a whole…something like that.

Take some time this week and pull out Who’s Next and give track #9 another go. It never disappoints.

APRIL IS BENEFIT MONTH

20110401 April Is Benefit Month APRIL IS BENEFIT MONTHIn reviewing our upcoming shows for the month, I was pleased to see that not one but TWO are performances benefitting some excellent causes and I’m hoping that people will make an effort to attend one or the other to firstly, experience some of the new material that we’ve steadily been adding to our repertoire over the last several weeks but also to do some good for some deserving charities.

First up, we have the honor of being the entertainment for ACES FOR FACES on Friday, April 8th at the Lakeview Pavilion in Foxboro. FACES is a Non-Profit Organization Organization dedicated to funding innovative educational grants for the Foxboro Public Schools. Event admission is $50 per person, which includes H’ors d oeuvres, Dinner, Casino with FACES Fun Money, raffles throughout the evening and your favorite Boston Event Band performing throughout the night.

Up next, we’ll be hosting our second annual “Save The Ta Tas” event at our favorite hang – Waxy O’Connors, also in Foxboro on Saturday, April 16th. While the event is open to the public, proceeds will be collected throughout the night to sponsor one of our good friends in her annual Avon Walk For Breast Cancer. Since 2003, the Avon Walks have raised more than $380 million – funds that are directly saving lives. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer also raises extraordinary awareness as participants spend an entire weekend walking 39 miles through cities and towns around the country. In 2010 alone, thousands of donors supported more than 21,000 Walkers and Crew raising more than $55 million in the national 9-event series!

So hopefully the message is clear. We like education and we like breasts. And we’d like to do our part to benefit both of them. We’d appreciate your time and donations to either as you’re available this month.

Questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

Cool Wedding Cake Idea: Cupcakes!

20110401 Cool Wedding Cake Idea Cupcakes Cool Wedding Cake Idea: Cupcakes!Accordingly to Wikipedia, the tradition of wedding cake dates back to the Roman Empire. To date, it’s been as essential to your reception as is a First Dance or having a great Boston Wedding Band.  Though in recent years, a trend has emerged with newlyweds favoring a more whimsical approach to the standard culinary confection: Cupcakes!

In 2010, I attended two weddings that preferred serving individual cupcakes to their guests over traditional slices. Let’s look at some advantages:

  • Fun! Who doesn’t love a cupcake?
  • Easy to eat. Why sit and pound a slice with a fork when you can get up, walk around and socialize and potentially smash your friends in the face with an icing bomb?
  • Youthful. Don’t cupcakes remind you of a younger, more carefree time in your life?
  • Colorful. Get wild and have your caterer deliver some frosting in line with the season.
  • Variety. Instead of one flavor wedding cake, why not a selection of numerous flavors for your wedding cupcakes, like Strawberry Shortcake, Lemon Drop, Red Velvet, Chocolate Obsession and the like?

Greatest Frontman of All Time: Mick Jagger

20110314 Greatest Frontman Of All Time Mick Jagger 150x150 Greatest Frontman of All Time: Mick JaggerI’ll tell you right off the bat that I’m not a huge Stones fan.  That said, the older I get, either they’re appealing to me more, I’m slowly starting to “get it” or something like that.  In recent years, I’ve actually been making more of a concerted effort to “get” certain bands that for whatever reason, I’ve been dismissive of to date.  Put simply, I think there’s something to be said for a widespread, collective embrace of an “artist” and maybe just because something doesn’t connect with me personally – am I mature enough to see past my own bias to recognize what might actually be “good” about artists like say, Grateful Dead, Springsteen, Stones and so on.

So, I’m watching Scorcese’s Shine A Light recently.  This 2008 documentary was shot over a two day period for a rare stint of shows that the legendary rock troupe held at an esteemed, albeit smaller venue than this stadium-packing bunch is accustomed to.  While the film is long – and brilliant on many different levels – the thing that struck me the most is how absolutely in control of every moment of the performance Jagger is.  Every lyric is echoed by a specific bodily inflection – a shift of the hips, a widening of the eyes, an index finger shot angrily to the rafters – commanding all bystanders to recognize and realize the gravity of every single moment of each tune.  He covers the entire stage and works the entire room – everyone gets involved, you can’t hide.

Let THAT sink in for a moment.

THEN, consider that this guy is knocking on death’s doorstep and for all intents and purposes should be spending the remainder of his days challenging fellow retirement homes buddies to a rousing game of cribbage rather than pouncing around the stage with a zeal that would make any contemporary blush by comparison.

Of equal impression on me, is the enthusiasm that the band still romps through classics like Shattered, Sympathy For The Devil, Jumpin Jack Flash and Start Me Up – standards that the best Boston Wedding Bands have been covering for years though rarely managing to capture the essence of the originators.

In closing, catch this flick if you have 3 hours to kill at some point.  It’s a great piece regardless of your opinion on these guys.  Hell…it’s made some strides in converting my sour ass.

Planning Your Boston Wedding: Hiring Friends as Vendors

20110308 Planning Your Boston Wedding Hiring Friends As Vendors 150x150 Planning Your Boston Wedding: Hiring Friends as VendorsSo your old college roommate now runs a wedding catering business, your next door neighbor is a wedding florist, your best friend runs a hip salon downtown and your brother-in-law manages the hippest Boston Wedding Band around. Naturally, you’d like to use them ALL to make your wedding all you dream of and more.

Is this ok?

Umm…yeah, of course it is. Who better to give you that extra special attention your wedding deserves than some of your closest friends and associates?

While your relationship with the friend has facilitated a decision, you still owe it to yourself to hold them to the same standard as any other wedding professional that you’d consider for your special event. Just because they’re your friend doesn’t mean that they need to provide the service for FREE or frankly, even some kind of special “friends and family discount”. It’s still work that they need to find the time and resource to provide to a client and as such should be compensated accordingly.

The fact of the matter is, most friends will likely decline compensation or, depending on the extent of their service, offer some type of generous discount as a courtesy. Here’s the key: LET THEM MAKE THE CONCESSION – DON’T ASSUME ANYTHING. Regardless of the outcome, you’ll either pay full rate and get “extra attention” on your wedding, or you’ll get a great wedding discount and that same “extra attention”.

Either way, you win.

Meet The New Boss: Evan Ouellette

20110207 Meet The New Boss Evan Ouellette1 Meet The New Boss: Evan OuelletteAs many of you are now aware, we’ve been actively ramping up Played Out 2.0.  Last December, our good friend DK made the personal decision to leave the band, creating a challenge for us to sustain our very excellent thing though also an opportunity to try some new things and continue to make our thing the very best offering in live entertainment this side of the Mississippah.

After numerous try-outs with respectable candidates, we made the decision to aggressively pursue a PLAN B of sorts, and move our talented guitarist to the keyboard spot – opening an opportunity for a good friend of ours to take the helm on the six string.

That friend is Evan Ouellette and you’ll love his ass.

Evan’s no stranger to the stage having made his mark over the years in several reputable, Boston-based original bands including The Brass Monkeys (a popular ska band of the mid 90s that helped pave the way for current established acts like Big D & The Kids Table, Westbound Train and others) and as the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter/brainchild of  The Tint (one of the top acts under the short-lived Primary Voltage Records).  In recent years, Evan has focused more so on honing his personal sound and craft with occasional one-offs and contributions to growing acts like Eksi Ekso, who will be releasing their eagerly anticipated album this March.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Evan to the band for a few filler gigs last year, helping out on Bass Guitar while Jake was welcoming his second daughter.  While we clicked as a group, the opportunity to integrate Evan didn’t present itself until recently and we couldn’t be more excited.

But…wait, you say.  Mike Geher doesn’t play KEYS?  He’s an f’n awesome guitarist !!!  Why would you move him?!?!?

For any of you that know anything about Mike, you know that to simply pigeonhole him as an excellent guitarist is short-sighted.  Mike is phenomenal MUSICIAN and you’re going to be blown away by how the group has upped it’s game substantially – truly sustaining our place as the very best Boston Wedding Band.

The unveiling commences on Saturday February 12 at our favorite spot, Waxy O’Connors in Foxboro.

See you there.
